“Where I’m From” Poem Instructions
- Using the George Ella Lyon poem as
a mentor text, create your own poem about yourself.
- Your poem should contain (at least)
four stanzas that contain the categories we discovered in the example poem
that illustrate where you are “from”. (For example: house/yard, sayings
& stories, people, hobbies & sports, food, music & other
media, religious events, special objects, significant places.) The last
stanza should tell “where you keep your memories” (photos, yearbooks, etc.)
and/or things that inspire you.
- Put your complete heading on the front of the poem.
- The title of your poem SHOULD be at the top of the front
page with the first letter of each word capitalized. The title of your poem should NOT be: italicized, underlined, in bold, all
caps, OR in quotes.
- The final draft should be created
on or glued to a piece of either construction or manila paper. You may
illustrate it, decorate it, and use colors – these will be posted outside the classroom. However, no points are given for
“pretty” so focus most of your time and energy on the content of the poem.
J
- The final draft should be neatly hand-written
or typed.
- Take care to spell correctly and
capitalize all proper nouns.
- This is due at the beginning of
class on Wednesday, September 14.
